Does God Change His Mind?

While speaking with a young man i was working with a couple of weeks ago we started talking about whether or not God changes, or changes His mind. This is the e-mail response that i sent to him. Please note: Names and dates have been changed to protect the innocent. No animals were killed in the making of this letter... severely maimed, maybe, killed, no.

The question was posed, "Does God change His mind?" There are a number of texts that look at this issue. I believe that you had mentioned one in Numbers but could not find it. I assume that what you were looking for was 23:19

Numbers 23:19 - "God is not a man that He should lie, neither the son of man that He should repent. Has He said, and shall He not do it? Or has He spoken, and shall He not make it good?"

It is important when looking at any verse to consider text in context:

Israel had just recently destroyed the armies of the Amorites & the Bashan while on their way to the promised land. These armies had stood against Israel and God instead of with him. As a result they were given into the hands of the Israelites.
So Balak, the son of Zippor, King of Moab decides that since it's clear that a strict military battle was not going to defeat the Israelites. Instead he goes to Balaam the prophet asking him to curse the Israelites so he can defeat them. At first Balaam is forbidden by God from going. Finally God does allow him to go, and Balaam tells Balak that he can only do what God tells him to do.
So Balak agrees and Balaam instructs Balak to set up seven alters with sacrifices and Balaam goes to talk to God. When he returns from speaking with God Balaam prophesies good concerning Israel and not evil. Balak is not happy with this turn of events and decides that maybe if he changes the position and the way that he faces the Israelites, maybe this will change the outcome. So he takes Balaam to a different place and tries again. So this verse is part of what God tells Balak through Balaam as a part of this second attempt. Balak attempts to do this 3 separate times, all to no avail. In essence, Balak is hoping that he can find a way to manipulate God. He is looking to find favor from the powerful God of Balaam. He thinks that in certain places God may be weaker or more powerful, or that some types of places are more or less honored by God... a god of the hills vs. a god of the valleys vs. a god of the plains etc. So God is basically telling Balak that he cannot manipulate or strong arm Him. He is not like other gods that are easily swayed and that he can gain favor from through sacrifice.

However, Balak is not fully defeated by this. He does succeed in partially defeating the Israelites as seen in chapter 25. He recognizes that attacking them physically as the Amorites & the Bashan attempted to do and were miraculously defeated was not going to work. Attempting to gain more favor from a stronger god or the Israelites God to overpower them spiritually was equally unsuccessful. So he decides that the next plan is to separate the Israelite people from their God. So he sends his people in to seduce the Israelites into sexual immorality and into worship of weaker gods that would make God jealous and angry. Due to this immorality God punished the Israelites with a massive plague, and in the midst of this plague Phinehas the priest, the grandson of Aaron, puts a spear through Zimri, one of the leaders of the congregation, due to his blatant immorality and sin. So this is what God says;
Num 25:10-11 - And Jehovah spoke to Moses saying, Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned My wrath away from the sons of Israel while he was zealous for My sake among them, so that I did not destroy the sons of Israel in My jealousy.

So, since the question is, "Does God change His mind?", after seeing this verse within its context i am seeing four places where the issue of this question is dealt with. 1) Balaam was instructed not to go to the Balak at first, however later God allows him to. 2) Balak attempts to manipulate God into doing what he wants. 3) Balaam succeeds in changing God's position towards His people. 4) Phinehas turns away God's wrath and prevents further destruction of Israel. So, what do you think is the answer to this question? Does God change? Does He change His mind? If so, how, and under what conditions? If not than how do you reckon what is happening here?

While working on the second draft of this letter i realized that there was at least one major problem with the theology covered. I decided to leave it in to see if this student was going to catch it or not, but since i know that that student does not even know about this blog, i thought i'd post the answer here. In point 3 it is not God's position that has changed. He is a Holy God and cannot stand sin & corruption. It is not God's position but Israel's position that has changed. Balak knew that He could not change God's position towards Israel, so instead he changed Israel's position towards God.

This is what the enemy has been doing here in the US for at least the last 70 years or so. In an attempt to destroy His people, the enemy has been working on changing our relationship towards God.

Good & Evil, Black & White, Hot & Cold

It's interesting to me how i hear people talk about good and evil. Our society & the media seem to see good and evil as diametrically opposed forces. As if it is a battle between God and the devil. Black vs. white. Hot vs Cold. Two equally ranked brute titans battling for the ages and whoever is stronger wins. What is interesting to me is that in many ways they have it right without ever realizing how wrong they are.

When attempting to describe good and evil as in comparison to black & white and hot & cold the analogy is very strong and correlates very well. What is interesting about these analogies is that black and white are not two diametrically opposed forces. For example, when you are in a dark room and you can't see, what do you do? You turn on the light. When it is bright out and you need it a little darker in the room what do you do? You turn on the dark, right? Even my two and three year old know that that's not the case. You don't turn on the dark, you turn off the light or close the shades so that the light doesn't get in. Black is not something you can turn on or off. It exists where light does not. There is no dark battling light there is only light or lack of light. Where light exists darkness flees. There even comes a point where there is no more light when it is pitch black. It cannot get any darker because it is the point at which there is no light at all.

The same thing works for hot and cold. What is the formula to make water into ice? It is H2O - h (water minus heat). It's not water plus cold because just like with light cold is simply the lack of heat. When you attempt to cool yourself down with ice what you are actually doing is dissipating the heat. There is such a vacuum of heat in the ice that when it comes into contact with your skin the heat in your skin dissolves into the ice. You feel cooler due to that heat leaving you, and that ice-cube melts due to your body heat entering and warming that ice cube. This can be a bit of a confusing concept at times, so maybe i should go at this a different way. Heat and cold are relative to each other right. Something feels cold because it has less heat than something else. Fifty-two degrees Fahrenheit to someone from Alaska is warm, maybe even hot. Fifty-two degrees Fahrenheit to someone from the Caribbean islands may feel extremely cold. However, there comes a point at which something cannot get any colder. Absolute Zero is the term for the temperature at which no heat exists. It is impossible to get any colder than that. However, heat can keep increasing indefinitely. There is no known hottest temperature.

So in essence there is no such thing as black & white or hot & cold. There is only light & lack of light (or less light). Heat & lack of heat (or less heat). The same thing applies to God. There is no good & evil. Evil is merely a corruption of good. It is the lack of God. Thus there is only God & lack of God (less God). Of course this is still not a perfect analogy because unlike with black & white and hot & cold there is no such thing as an absolute zero with God. He exists everywhere. He cannot, not be. So there cannot ever be No God, there can only be attempts to block him out like shades blocking the light on a very bright day. Thus the argument is not God vs. Satan or good vs. evil, but rather God vs. less of God.

Decisions! Decisions! Decisions!

Why is it that we assume that teenagers are supposed to be immature and make stupid decisions? I know that i caught myself doing it yesterday. I was at work and i was talking with someone about their teenaged grandson. From what this lady was saying, it sounded like her grandson was making very wise decisions about his relationships, dating, and girls. The more i listened to her talking about him the more this teenager / young man reminded me of myself at that age. She asked my take on his situation as if she couldn't understand how he, as a teenager, could be making wise decisions. While talking to her i realized that i was almost as surprised as she was that her grandson was acting this way. He seemed to have a pretty clear head on his shoulders. The decisions that he was making were well thought out, based on experience and logic, and meant present self-sacrifice in order to complete a future goal. I was actually quite impressed, but it was funny because she was worried about him, that he was making wise decisions, and if that was healthy.

So that brings me back to my initial question. Why do we assume that teenagers are supposed to be immature and make stupid decisions? Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old(er) he will not depart from it. When someone is raised to make wise decisions financially, with regards to friends, in their educational and social endeavors, etc. that will undoubtedly follow them. Chances are they will end up making stupid mistakes from time to time, but that doesn't mean that a teenager is not capable of making wise decisions on a regular basis.

The other day i was talking with a couple that is around my and my wife's same age who are making some decisions that may not be the wisest. In this one area they are starting to seriously hurt themselves and may be needlessly putting themselves in a very treacherous position... again. It's almost like they are not considering the long term consequences to their action but rather making the decision based on what they want and could get now. I thought that that was supposedly an "adolescent" mentality. It's interesting because many of the youth of my generation were raised with the mentality that it was alright for them to make stupid decisions because they were teenagers, they were going to make wrong decisions, and so it was OK. Now 10 - 20 years later so many people of my generation are doing exactly the same thing. Shouldn't we have moved beyond that "phase"? Why is it still occurring? Simple, we (my generation) were raised to think that we were supposed to act this way and that it is OK, so now we still are!

When youth are raised to think that being a kid is all about fun without consideration for how what they do affects themselves and others, in the long run or the present, they tend to grow up to be immature adults making foolish decisions.
